I’m running Vagrant 1.8.6 on Ubuntu 16. After updating my VirtualBox from 5.0.x to 5.1.6 I started getting the following error when running “vagrant up”:

There was an error while executing `VBoxManage`, a CLI used by Vagrant
for controlling VirtualBox. The command and stderr is shown below.

Command: ["startvm", "8776bac7-d513-4b16-9abb-e241953c269c", "--type", "headless"]

Stderr: VBoxManage: error: The virtual machine '<BOX-NAME>' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1)
VBoxManage: error: Details: code NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005), component MachineWrap, interface IMachine

To fix it I’ve run the following commands:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get remove --purge virtualbox-5.0 && sudo apt autoremove

To remove anything left from the old installation. Then,

sudo /sbin/vboxconfig

This one will rebuild the Kernel modules for Virtual box.

Now restart your computer.

Happy Coding!
